About Me

I am not an easy person to just sum up and put into one page. I will give it a shot though.

My name is Heather, but since I started writing and gaming, most know me as Red or Birdy. I don't use either of my last names at the moment except for legalities. It brings a lot of pain and remembering the past that I am not fully healed from. Therefore, it is easier to go by nicknames.

This blog was originally my place to vent frustrations and talk about my household (The Birdcage). When I changed the name from Chirps from the Birdcage to Birdcage Media, I decided to turn my blog into a voice for others as well. I have been through a LOT in my lifetime, and would love to help others.

I have been a mother since 2003, but after my daughter was born in 2011, I began to struggle with post-partum depression. This just continued to spiral as my husband was working roughly 80 hours a week in a job that we no longer cared for. He was depressed and never home and I was depressed and dealing with milk supply issues. It was a recipe for disaster. That disaster came on August 22, 2012 … when the state stepped in.

Life continued to struggle as people, very close people to me, passed away and my husband and I grew apart. We finally separated in 2017 after trying very hard to make things continue to work. It was not a pretty divorce and there was a lot of hatred spread to the children.

Because of these life-changing events, I have changed what I want my blog to share with others. I want people to know that they are not alone with mental illness. There are others with depression, bi-polar, OCD, etc. I want to take the taboo out of the discussion and diagnoses of mental illness.

What else am I passionate about?
  • Healthy Choices
  • Caring for Yourself
  • Parenting Teens
  • Staying Sane while Parenting 4 Children
  • Writing
  • Tea (not even joking)
  • Sensory Processing Disorder (Autism Spectrum)
  • Life in Kansas City (small town disguised as a big city)
