Million Dollar Question today is ....

The writing prompt today from BlogHer's NaBloPoMo November 2014 is:

Do you consider yourself a professional blogger?

So, do I consider myself a professional blogger? Yes, yes I do. While I may not be earning as much as other bloggers who can snag a thousand dollars for a sponsored post, I do have the utmost respect for my blogging. I used to just get on and write when I felt like it, but now I have started to tailor what I write about and what I am passionate about. There are a few ways to know if you fall into the professional blogging category. Here are my responses to them.

Respect:

I treat my blog with the respect it deserves. In addition, I treat my readers with respect. I LOVE when readers comment on my blog and I LOVE when readers share my posts. I see which ones draw the attention and use that to see how I can use my influence to help others. I will, however, do a post WITHOUT asking for compensation. Y'all can throw stones at me if you want. However, I feel that sometimes just simply showing your support and love WITHOUT having anything in return is nice.

Approached by Brands:

This is NEW to me. Recently I have started receiving things in the mail without me having to go to the brand. It is an AWESOME feeling. Kinda like you know you're an adult when you get your first washer & dryer (and are excited about it). Well, I finally felt like a professional when brands started to come to me. It is one of the best feelings in the world.

Concerned about Content:

You have become a professional when you are concerned about what you put out there into cyber world. You don't always retweet things or share them on Facebook. You suddenly are concerned about conflicting companies. I have hit that point. I have fallen in love with a few companies and unless I am doing a comparison review, you won't find their competition on my blog. I do not feel the need to jump on every item in order to get my name out there.

Compensation:

I touched on this earlier. I WILL do posts without requiring compensation, but that isn't a majority of my posts. I have affiliate links throughout my posts and I receive gifts in exchange for content. The gifts are sometimes a product with pretty high price tags on them, and sometimes they are straight up cash. I don't feel the need to tell my readers how I have been compensated, just that I HAVE been compensated. You need to realize that while I am being compensated for some posts, my opinions are mine. I do NOT believe in doing paid reviews in exchange for high ratings.

Felt Okay to Say No:

Yup, I have had companies contact me and want me to try their products. I have now officially started declining. They are products I would never use or I just don't believe in. I am not a believer in quick fixes. I have problems with companies that want me to back something that will give you changes in a week's time (unless it is a skin clearing product or something like that).

Interaction is Key:

I am not only immersed in my blog, but also my social media interaction. I get involved with blogging communities and groups that will help bring my blog more viewers. I also let them critique my blog and website to make sure that I am on the track that I desire. This is very important to me.

Just note that becoming a professional blogger takes time. Not only that, there are times when you feel like you are literally tied to your computer. It is VITAL that you create a schedule, just like you would for any other job. One of the best posts I have read about becoming a professional blogger was written in March of last year when I was first looking at really diving into blogging.

  1. For me going pro is your mindset. When you show up often because you care you're a pro.

  2. Well done on getting to the stage where you're approached to write sponsored posts. My blogs don't lend themselves to that but that doesn't mean I can't start another. I'd like to find out more about how to do it.

  3. Your post is quite encouraging and it shows how much you have grown to get to where you are and thank you for passing that information. Like you said it is not easy to achieve that status as a blogger.

  4. That's got to be a really good feeling! You've got vendors approaching you about endorsing their products.

And like you, I too would never promote any product that I didn't personally believe in. Thanks for sharing what being a professional feels like!

  5. Professional blogging is a pretty serious undertaking. You make some good points here, Heather, and new bloggers should consider them.

As for compensation, I actually think of professional blogging as the lynchpin in your sales funnel, either as an affiliate, product creator or service provider. It doesn't have to bring immediate direct compensation from sales or fees, and I think it typically does not. It does need to gather followers who are interested in your business, and who will in fact, "follow" you beyond your blog.

  6. I would love to know how you have created getting paid for sponsored posts. Not sure if that would work for me as a therapist providing content for clients, potential clients and others about relationships and love and healing. But I have gotten paid in the past for articles and I write for a site that pays only a very little bit of money.
I do have some people paying to place text ads on my site.
    Warmly,
    Dr. Erica

  7. Hi Heather, I imagine there are many different interpretations of the meaning of a "professional blogger". It's great to hear that you're so serious about your blogging and getting the kinds of results you want to get.

  8. Hi Heather,

Great to know that you are serious about your blog because that is a huge part of business. Comments coming in are like new friends coming into your life. It's amazing. I myself just love it.

As long as your blog is servicing you, you are doing well. Great job!

  9. Hi Heather.

I'm so glad to hear that things are going well for you! That's awesome.

I am a blogger as well, but I haven't really thought about putting the word "professional" in front of that title. However, I guess it does fit to a certain extent. I am serious about my content and definitely do put time into promoting it, thereby slowly building my brand and online presence.

Like you, I also enjoy it when I get comments and questions as I love interacting with my readers and answering holistic health questions.

As a professional green cleaning writer, I have had brands approach me to do balanced and impartial product reviews, which always feels good. :) (It shows that your writing is recognized and that you have influence online.) However, I didn't make money from the brands, just from the company that hired me to do professional writing on the chosen topic.

  10. Hi Heather, I like that you are a professional blogger that takes your craft seriously. When you are passionate about what you do and do it with integrity, the rewards are big. I think it's awesome that you are now able to receive compensation from sponsored posts and affiliates. Keep inspiring all of us!

  11. WELL!! It looks like a have a lot of work to do to become a pro myself. I am going through a sort of re-arranging of priorities in my life right now so it is interesting to see how my blogging career will fall into place. In all reality I am more of a coach, but I have also wanted to be a writer and I felt like the fact that I've kept a blog for the last two years made me a sort of published author or professional. Good to know that I may have met that summit, but it is now time to move onto higher ground :)

  12. The question is definitely food for thought. I'm glad your blog is becoming more the way you want it. Mine... meh. I haven't yet gotten my writing blog up, but when I do it will be for the purpose of sharing my writing, and also writing tips I'm learning along the way. The clearer my focus, the better I'll feel about considering myself a professional blogger.

  13. I remember a while back when someone asked me how I knew I was a professional blogger. Well, I was getting paid to blog years ago, was certainly an indication. A lot of people think professional bloggers are of a certain kind. If you're making money, you're a professional. It may not mean that you're totally living off of it or successful, but if you've ventured into making money with blogging, you're certainly stepped into the professional ring.
