I actually live tweeted the entire event and was really surprised with a few of the presentations and some of the winners. Let me give you my highlights and then give you the list of winners.
The first was DEFINITELY Patricia Arquette's acceptance speech. I was rooting for Meryl Streep to win Best Supporting Actress because I LOVED her role in Into the Woods. However, Patricia, well, I'll let the memes speak for me.
“Yes,” says Meryl Streep. “Yes.” pic.twitter.com/sogBD0Dkkf— Dave Itzkoff (@ditzkoff) February 23, 2015 — ~ Emily (@ColoradoMom) February 23, 2015I totally agree, Meryl. That deserves a HUGE fist pump. And I will have this meme playing anytime I get something accomplished in my house.Okay, moving on ... To recover from such a moving speech, Neil Patrick Harris broke the Oscars. Don't believe me?
Yup, that is Doogie Howser in nothing but tighty whities and black socks. I actually got this picture during the news recap because my brain couldn't function during the actual Oscars. I was too busy picking my jaw up off the ground.
However, the shock did wear off. While I was waiting for the next thing to blow me away, I was surprised to realize The Lego Movie was not nominated. The stupid song Everything is Awesome was. You know, really, that song wouldn't be so bad, but it gets stuck in my head EVERY time someone sings it ... and it gets sung anytime someone says something is awesome.
In addition to that shock, during the In Memoriam that Meryl Streep introduced, there were two very influential people who were ignored! Joan Rivers and Elaine Stritch both passed away in 2014 and neither were shown. I also am not sure why they only did sketches instead of showing live clips.
Before I forget ... John Travolta is a TOTAL creeper!
John Legend brought the feels back with Glory. Not one dry eye in the audience, and there were tears in my eyes at home. Then when they won Best Original Song they brought politics into the Oscars.
Right now, the struggle for freedom and justice is real. - John Legend
Following that moving speech, Lady Gaga came out to do a musical piece. I was prepared to be extremely irritated because it was the Sound of Music. You cannot mess with my childhood movie. There is no way I would EVER put Lady Gaga and Julie Andrews in the same room, but it is a good thing that I am not in charge. Lady Gaga totally blew me away. I forget that she can really sing. The feels happened when she was done giving me goosebumps. Julie Andrews gave her the biggest hug and major props.

| Ignore the haters, Lady Gaga ... You rocked it! |

Some other issues that were touched on were ALS, Alzheimer's and Suicide Awareness. Graham Moore won for Imitation Game and we are so glad that he didn't get cut off when he said he had one more thing. He admitted that he battled depression and attempted suicide when he was 16. He was so glad that he was still here, but he never felt like he fit in. He left us with the best piece of advice ... Stay Weird. Stay Different.
The Oscars brought tears of joy and tackled serious issues. My friend, Kelly, stated it best on her Twitter profile:

Hi Heather,
ReplyDeleteI just finished checking out the Oscars and you did a excellent recap of the show. I really enjoy watching it every year to see who wins and performs. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Heather,
ReplyDeleteI'm not a big fan of watching these shows but the media attention that Neil Patrick Harris received was genius. It was hilarious watching the excerpts on the morning news.
I hope you have a great week!
I'm not an Oscars watcher, but I appreciate the fact that so many big topics were addressed and I did watch Lady Gaga's performance, which was stunning.
ReplyDeleteI was so busy that I was not able to see Oscars. Well, good thing you have written the recap. Thanks. Oh, John Legend is still legendary. Have a great day!
