Time for Summer Vacation

I really try to do something fun for my children every summer. It doesn't always happen, but we try. When the kids were younger, we used to trek down to Manhattan, KS at the end of every July to go to the Riley County Fair. I LOVED the fair growing up, and was an avid 4-Her. As the children grew, and then we added to the brood, it was more difficult to make the trip. It doesn't mean the kids love it any less though.

Last year, we sent Bullfrog off to camp with his friend and Peanut got to fly to Texas. In fact, it was a year ago today that she took off for her week trip with her aunt. Even though we had two toddlers in the house, and my anxiety was through the roof about having my kids leaving for so long, it was great for EVERYONE involved.

So, what is it about the Riley County Fair that the kids love so much. It's possible it's the rides (which I don't have any photos of at the moment). However, there are also the animals and the rodeo. *photos from 2007*

Honestly though, I think it is the fact they get to spend time with family members that they love so much.

Which is why they are getting to take off at the end of July this year. My mother is coming to get them and let them stay with her for a week. They will get to spend time at the fair, go to the pool, see family members while they're down there, and who knows what else. They also will get to help my family around the house. Most importantly though, they get to have some long nights without their parents before school starts. I do not care how much you love your parents, everyone enjoys time away. I feel very blessed that I have the ability to let my kids spend time with my parents, helping out, and getting to enjoy their childhood before school starts the next week (for Peanut, Bullfrog has another week of break).

This summer has been crazy busy for everyone, and we haven't been able to squeeze half the stuff in we had hoped. I am hoping with this small vacation (even though it's only two hours away), they will be able to soak up some sun, play with friends they haven't seen for a while, and stay up late. Why? Because everyone deserves a little summer vacation.

  1. The fair really looks like fun Heather!

And it's easy to see how and why the kids would have a blast!

Just riding those ponies looks like they'll have stories to tell for
    years to come!

And I'm sure you and the husband could use a break too!LOL!

  3. I just took my four kids to a remote ranch in northern Nevada. They had the greatest time.

  4. There is a place here in KS, I love to take my kids to. It's actually the #1 most beautiful places in the state. Elk Falls. It is very remote and no cell service. There is a beautiful B&B there and my kids love to go. We used to go every year, but the past two years we haven't made it. I hope to go next spring though! Remote locations are some of my favorite spots.

  5. Oh, how I miss those days when my kids were younger and we went to the fair and other fun places! Now that they're older, it's more all about hanging out with their friends. Enjoy your time with your little ones!
