May 4 - Monkey's Graduation
We kicked off the month of celebrations and graduations with my 5 year old officially graduating out of preschool. She started preschool two years ago when she was 3 because she struggled heavily in social environments. She still struggles but it's not nearly as bad, nor as often. We have gotten her to speak up in class, take part in group activities, and even show off what she knows. We are excited that she has finished this chapter with flying colors and preparing to start Kindergarten this fall.
May 7 - Eldest Graduation
There is a child I don't talk about rarely on this blog because he is not my bio child. He resides with his mother and step father and is now 18 years old. However, I have loved him from the time he was born, just before my high school graduation. I am so proud of how he has grown and remained grounded despite so many obstacles. The past few years have been extremely tough on him with losses in his family, but he graduated from high school with GREAT grades and is headed to Pitt State University this fall. We went to get my mother-in-law on Friday so she could attend, and then made the three hour drive on Saturday. Sunday (Mother's Day), I got to spend with my mother-in-law taking her home. She is a second mother to me and I really enjoyed getting to spend the weekend with the entire family!
May 14 - LEGO KidsFest & Coding
With everything that was going on the week before I completely spaced off what was special about May 13th. Therefore, I completely missed the opportunity to attend LEGO KidsFest free of charge, but I took my son the next day out of pocket. You can see more on KidsFest in my previous post! Following KidsFest, I took a quick power nap and then headed to mentor at Coding & Cocktails. I really enjoy mentoring other women in coding, a topic that is so dear to me. This month was JavaScript & jQuery.
May 17 - Bullfrog's Progression
On May 24th at 10am, we celebrated all the 5th graders at New Chelsea progressing to 6th grade. They put on a great show and there was a huge awards ceremony. We are more than glad to be done with his teacher, as she was not receptive at all to his learning needs. However, despite the trials he had during 5th grade, he still came out with great grades and an IEP plan for middle school. I could not be happier for my little "nerd."
May 20-21 - Planet Comicon
Following KidsFest, I got a few days break and then it was time for Planet Comicon at Bartle Hall. We had Stan Lee, Jenna Coleman, Arthur Durvall, George Takei, Barbara Eden, and SO many other big names! This was my very first year volunteering and I put in just under 27,000 steps in 3 days. I worked as line control all day Friday and the morning of Saturday. Saturday afternoon was spent as audience monitor for the panel rooms, where I got to see more Hillywood Show parodies. Those girls are SO talented (and I would like to know how they get along so well). Saturday night, however, I got to be monitor for illegal photographing of celebs and then ending as line control for Stan Lee. Sunday just got better with taking my stepson to the festivities and then being an audience monitor for Barbara Eden ... ending the day with getting my picture taken with her and having her autograph my pass. I also got a picture my daughter drew autographed by Vic Mignogna.
While Comicon was going on, there was an activity that Friday night. After I finished my shift, I walked down to the Crossroads (part of that 27k steps) to take part in the Start-up Crawl. KCWiT had a table down at Office Port, which is right across the street from the Sprint Accelerator. I think we had a gorgeous layout. I am not sure what the turnout was, as I couldn't stay for the entire thing.
May 24 - MY Graduation!
After going back to school in August of 2015 for my Associates at Kansas City Kansas Community College, I walked across the stage with my degree. I was a 4.0 student and obtained an Associate in Science for Liberal Arts. I am not done though ... starting at University of Missouri-KC this fall to work on a dual major for Accounting and Computer Science. For now, I smile knowing that I FINALLY have a college degree!
May 26 - First Sirens of the Season
Living in Tornado Alley, it's something one must prepare for ... tornadoes. I feel that the 26th of May is fairly late in the season for the severe weather to start, but it came in with a bang. We had beautiful weather on the 25th and even took an evening walk to our local McDonald's for ice cream. However, the 26th brought nickel size hail and tornadoes. Unfortunately, the tornadoes waited until my kids had just fallen asleep for nap to strike. This meant I had to run up the stairs and wake Bullfrog and then grab a sleeping Monkey & Turtle. They were not amused, although Turtle found it no trouble to fall back asleep. Pitbull actually was on the way home from school and her bus got diverted to a fire house for everyone to be put in a safe location. We were fine and there was no damage. The storm actually ended up slipping just north of us, but it definitely ensured that we had our severe weather plan tested.
Memorial Day Weekend
We ended the month of May with Memorial Day weekend. Saturday, my friend & blogger at Dine & Dish held an impromptu movie night complete with outdoor activities, food, s'mores, and watching McFarland, USA in the dark on her driveway. My eldest wasn't allowed to take her phone and after some sulking, she made a brand new group of friends and had a great time. The younger three had a great time on scooters and playing pretend. I could not have asked for a more relaxing start to the weekend. The weekend ended with a Pancake Breakfast held by our church to get together and remember those who gave their lives for our freedom. Lots of mud, lots of smiles, and the hubby and I finished the day by going to see Avengers: Civil War together. It was a great month.
